Barn Repair

I began repairing barns in the late 1980’s, as it was an easy extension from notching new timber frames. It’s really interesting work, as each barn is unique, yet the principles surrounding how they were originally constructed are the same.

It’s a complex system of support, meaning for example that roof lines are affected by rotten posts in the stables 40 feet below.

My three sons joined me in repairing barns as they got older, beginning about 15 years ago.
When timbers get rotten, we’ll either replace them, or notch new parts. We jack up the saggy floors in barns, replace rotten floor joists, called 'sleepers', lay new two inch and three hemlock flooring, put on new barn board, parge stone foundations and a hundred other things that come up. I have Mennonites I know who can put on new metal roofs, or pour new concrete foundations. It’s great to see old heritage barns rejuvenated, to last another hundred years.

Please email or call me to have a look at your barn for an estimate, which is included as part of a barn inspection
